Biblical chronology Q and A (9 June 2011)

Are we required by faith to believe that a literal Flood of Noah occurred?

My opinion is that we are not so required, because the denial of a literal Flood is not contrary to any infallible teaching of the Magisterium, and does not imply a denial or substantial corruption of any infallible teaching of the Magisterium. But I am also of the opinion that a literal worldwide (fairly extensive) Flood did occur, and the Noah and his family escaped in the Ark.

When did the Biblical Flood of Noah occur?

2807 B.C. beginning in May (see my previous post)

When was Jesus born?

Scholars who research and write Biblical chronology do not agree on the year of the Birth of our Lord. The dates proposed by Biblical chronologists range from 15 BC (my date) to 12 BC (Vardaman, Kokkinos) to various dates from 8 BC to 1 BC. There is no consensus.

When was Jesus crucified?

Scholars who research and write Biblical chronology do not agree on the year of the Crucifixion of our Lord. The dates proposed by Biblical chronologists range from 19 AD (my date) to 21 AD (Vardaman) to various dates in the late 20’s and early 20’s A.D. The latest date proposed is 36 AD (Kokkinos). The majority opinion formerly was the late 20’s, but now most scholars place the Crucifixion in the 30’s. No one year is generally agreed upon by Biblical chronologists.

When were the Gospels written?

There is no consensus among Biblical chronologists. My dates are as follows:

The Writing of the Gospel of Matthew:between early A.D. 22 and early A.D. 25, during the reign of the emperor Gaius.

The Writing of the Gospel of Mark:in late fall and winter of A.D. 34 to 35, during the reign of the emperor Claudius.

The Writing of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles:between early A.D. 44 and early A.D. 46 (while Paul was in Rome), during the reign of the emperor Nero.

The Writing of the Gospel of John:during the reign of Domitian, sometime between A.D. 68 and A.D. 81 (most likely sometime well before A.D. 82, when he was exiled to Patmos because of the Gospel).

The Writing of the Book of Revelation:while John was on the island of Patmos, from approximately A.D. 82 to A.D. 83 or 84.
