The older Q and A is still open, so that we can finish any discussions there, or move the topic to the new post. Thanks.

  1. Tom Mazanec says:

Suppose a man shoots a gun into the air on New Year’s Day, and the bullet falls and kills someone. Or suppose a couple kids pour water on the sidewalk on a subzero day to make a skating patch, and later an old lady falls on it and breaks her hip.
    Would these be Mortal Sins?

    • Ron Conte says:

There is always the question of negligence, and of the reasonable anticipation that someone might be harmed. The gun hypothetical might be a mortal sin, as one can anticipate the possibility of grave harm. But it is not the sin of murder, since the act is not ordered toward the death of an innocent. The ice hypothetical also seem sinful due to a callous disregard for how the act might affect others. But these acts are not inherently disordered; it is a question of circumstances.
